About
The overarching motivation for all 22 Past4Future partners to work with paleoscience archives is the ambition to understand the climate system and the importance of predicting future climate changes.
The predicted global warming during the coming 100 years urgently calls for an improved understanding of the climate system, including the biogeochemical system. Past4Future will improve our knowledge by looking into the past and will adress these key questions:
-
What is the risk of abrupt changes during interglacial periods?
-
Can we understand the greenhouse gas records of the interglacial periods?
-
What is the risk of rapid collapse of the ice sheets?
-
Did ocean circulation change significantly during the interglacial periods?

The EU’s Seventh Framework programme has granted € 6,647,909 for a total of 6 work packages. Past4Future is coordinated from the University of Copenhagen and the 22 beneficiaries are from eight EU member countries, Norway, Switzerland, Canada and China. More than 100 senior and young scientists are expected to participate actively in the programme. Past4Future will bring together many partners who have not traditionally worked together before and who use widely different techniques in their research.
